We tried to do a less technical episode by diving into the CIS Google Chrome Benchmark. We ran into all kinds of issues with this project. However, we managed to pick a few settings that we think will work for us. We also share some stories about making it to episode 20. There were moments when we thought we wouldn’t make it. Trying to do a project based podcast has been fun and challenging.

Google Chrome Browser Settings

Use the following steps to configure a standalone Chrome Browser without Active Directory and Group Policy. All of the settings can be found in the Chrome browser settings under “Show advanced settings…”.

Ensure ‘Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed’ is set to ‘Disabled’

  1. System
  2. Uncheck “Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed”

Password Manager

Ensure ‘Enable the password manager’ is set to ‘Disabled’

  1. Passwords and forms
  2. Uncheck “Offer to save your web passwords. Manage passwords

Ensure ‘Default cookies settings is set to enable ( keep cookies for the duration of the session)

  1. Privacy
  2. Click “Content settings…”
  3. enable “Keep local data only until you quit your browser”

Corrections

The option to blacklist extensions is not available in the Google Chrome settings. We are looking into this. However, this might be an option that is only available with Active Directory and Group Policy.
